My Favourite Small Businesses

Since its nearing the holiday season, I think it’s more important than ever to support small and independent business’s. Supporting neighborhood, and smaller scale companies can truly help a community thrive! Plus you’re helping the environment through reducing your carbon footprint.

The great thing about living in London, there are so many sustainable shops to choose from! I’ve also found Instagram to be an incredible platform for discovering niche business’s to purchase everything from plants to art.

Over the years I have certainly become partial to a handful of brands that I think are worth mentioning. Some of my favourite small business’s include: Alexandria Coe Art, The Sustainable Department Store, and Earl of East.

All that being said, I would love to hear from you! What are some of your favourite independent and sustainable shops?

Alexandria Coe Art

Alexandria Coe is a London based artist, whose illustrations of the female body are raw and beautiful. While her drawings are abstract, they show emotion and seek to tell a story, which I love. I’m very excited for the release of her second book, ‘Lovers’, which is focus’s on the theme of relationships, and will include images and text that depict what that word means to her. Over on MIRROR WATER, Julie Tanner interviewed Alexandria about her upbringing, her art, and why she prefers the word ‘naked’ over ‘nude’. You can read that interview here.

The Sustainable Department Store

The Sustainable Department Store is essentially a digital market, where you can shop independent, ethical, and sustainable goods. Everything The Sustainable Department Store stocks is made from natural materials, and takes into consideration the importance of good craftsmanship. When you shop at The Sustainable Department Store, you are helping to support small artists and local businesses which is incredible. While I have so many favourites, a few items that have caught my eye recently include the Ann Vincent Piu Set Candles , Design By Nature Flowers, Mythology Iris Tray, and Hara Malala Organic Bamboo Scrunchies.

Earl of East

Similarly to The Sustainable Department Store, Earl of East is a creative business with their own range of products, and a marketplace to shop independent artists. Personally I love the Earl of East candles, my favourite being the Shinrin-Yoku Soy Wax Candle. I also love the London based ceramic company Brutes, started by Emma de Clercq. Earl of East stocks their ceramic mugs, which are seriously a work of art. Some other items I like are the Ferm Living Verso Table Vase, and Aya Ceramic Platter.
